Every winter, as soon as that first snowstorm hits, pool owners start to worry. “Should I brush the snow off?” “Will the weight damage the cover?” “Is the pool safe under there?”
Good news: snow doesn’t harm a properly winterized pool — whether it has a safety cover or no cover at all. In fact, your pool is built to handle winter weather, and the winterization process is specifically designed to protect it through the coldest months.
Let’s break down why snowfall is nothing to stress about.
Snow Won’t Damage a Winterized Pool
Once a pool is winterized, it’s essentially in “hibernation mode,” secured and protected against freezing temperatures, storms, and yes — snow.
The chemicals are balanced, the water level is set correctly, and all the plumbing is protected. With these steps complete, a layer of snow on top does absolutely nothing to the structure, the equipment, or the cover.
Even heavy snowfall?
Still fine. Pool shells, decks, and properly installed covers are engineered with winter weather in mind.
Mesh Covers: Snow Melts, Water Drains, Everything Works
A big point of confusion for many pool owners is the role of the mesh safety cover. Here’s how it works:
- Mesh isn’t meant to block water. Snow melts, rain falls, and that water naturally drains through the cover and into the pool.
- This is intentional — it keeps the cover from turning into a pond, keeps weight off the surface, and reduces strain. (When snow melts into the pool, it raises the water level slightly, which in turn also helps support any ice/ snow build up, since ice floats.)
- The pool is winterized to handle that water, so while the water level may rise through the winter, it’s totally normal and harmless.
The cover’s job is not waterproofing. It’s protection.
So What Is the Cover For?
1. Keeping debris out
Leaves, twigs, pine needles — all the things winter blows around — stay out of your pool. That makes for a much cleaner and faster spring opening.
2. Safety compliance
A safety cover is exactly what it sounds like: a protective barrier strong enough to prevent someone (or something) from falling into the water.
What About Pools Without Covers?
Still safe. Still fine.
Uncovered pools that have been winterized are also designed to withstand snow and freezing temperatures. The snow simply sits on top, melts, and becomes part of the pool water — exactly the same result as with a mesh cover.
The key is the winterization process, not the presence of a cover.
To meet minimum safety code standards, we leave the handrails in the pool during winter. This ensures that there is a stable grab point should an accident happen.
Bottom Line: Snow Won’t Hurt Your Pool
If your pool has been properly winterized:
- Snow won’t damage it
- The cover won’t collapse
- The water level won’t cause issues
- The structure is protected and secure
Winter may look harsh, but your pool is tougher than it seems — and it’s prepared for the season.
