Should You Swim During a Rainstorm?

The forecast is bleak this week for taking a dip, and when the pool calls, we want you to be safe. We all know that summer storms in Colorado can roll in quickly—sometimes right when the pool is at its most inviting. At Metro Pools, LLC, we love seeing communities enjoy their pools, but safety always comes first. One question we often hear is: Is it safe to swim during a rainstorm?

Here’s what you need to know before jumping in when the clouds roll over.

🌧️ Swimming in the Rain: The Basics

Light rain, by itself, is not necessarily dangerous. If there’s no thunder, lightning, or heavy wind, a quick dip in the pool during a drizzle can be perfectly fine (though maybe not the most enjoyable). But when it comes to storms, there are serious risks that should not be ignored.

⚡ The Real Danger: Lightning

This is the #1 reason we advise immediately exiting the pool if there’s lightning or thunder in the area. Water conducts electricity, and if lightning strikes anywhere near your pool—whether it’s in the water or nearby—it can be deadly. Our technicians also refrain from putting a pole in the water for the same reason. We will balance your pool chemistry, and make sure that your equipment is functioning, but that leaf floating on top will probably wait until the next visit.

The Rule of Thumb:
If you can hear thunder, you’re close enough to be struck by lightning. Clear the pool immediately and wait at least 30 minutes after the last thunderclap before getting back in.

🌬️ Wind and Visibility Concerns

Storms often bring strong winds, which can blow debris like tree branches, patio furniture, or even umbrellas into the pool area. This not only poses a physical hazard to swimmers, but also can clog skimmers and filters. It’s not THAT the wind blows, it’s WHAT the wind blows.

Heavy rain can also cloud the water, reducing visibility. If you can’t see the bottom of the pool clearly, it’s best to stay out until conditions improve.

🧪 Water Quality Matters

Rainwater can introduce contaminants into your pool, including dirt, pollen, and bacteria from surrounding surfaces. If you have a landscaping company and a grassy hill by your pool, fertilizers and lawn chemicals can get washed into your pool. A sudden downpour can dilute your pool’s chemicals, especially chlorine, making it less effective at sanitizing the water.

At Metro Pools, LLC, we recommend testing your pool water after any significant rainfall and adjusting your chemicals accordingly. Our team can help you balance your water quickly and safely.

✅ Safe Swimming Tips During Rainy Weather

  1. Always check the weather forecast before swimming.
  2. Get out at the first sign of thunder or lightning.
  3. Secure outdoor furniture to prevent wind-related hazards.
  4. Cover your pool if storms are expected.

Test and treat your pool water after a storm to ensure it’s safe for swimming.

A summer rain shower might feel like a fun twist on your pool day, but it’s not worth the risk when lightning or high winds are involved. When in doubt, clear the pool and wait it out. Your safety—and your swimmers’ safety—comes first.
